It’s time for another track roundup. This one’s a day later than planned. Artists featured this week include Queens Of The Stone Age, Concrete Vehicles, @, Peaches and Falling In Reverse.

THE BOPS:

‘Where The Goth Girls At?’ – Queens Of The Stone Age

I too cringed when I first saw the title. Part of me hoped it would be a mockery of people who cosplay as goths. It’s not. Middle-aged Josh Homme seems to be genuinely singing about his love of goth girls. But somehow it rocks. Homme is channelling his inner Bowie – his howling vocal delivery sounds so good here. There are also some beautiful strings backing the stoner rock guitars. It all feels very epic. 

‘Text Stop’ – Concrete Vehicles

Yes! This slow-building post-punk tune is right up my street. It suspensefully follows a slow stabbing rhythm, climbing up, easing off in the middle, and then exploding into a noisy crescendo, before settling back down into a soft and almost jazzy outro. The song is all about never leaving the small town you’re born in and the comfort and equal stagnation this brings. The Canadian band dropped their debut album Station On The Hill last year (under their former band name Computer) and I imagine they have another one coming out very soon.  

‘Bird’ - @

This track ‘Bird’ from @ has a very eerie feel about it that I’m digging. On headphones, the guitar feels like it's right inside you ear. The video definitely adds to the creepiness. Finding information on this band was tricky as they don’t have the most Google-friendly band name, but I persevered, and it turns out they have an album out October 16^th titled Autosmile, which could be worth a listen if you like this song.

‘You’re Alright’ – Peaches ft. Joe Talbot (Pixel Grip remix)

I don’t usually post remixes on this blog, but this one is too damn fun. It takes Peaches freaky song ‘You’re Alright’ and turns it into a pummelling house banger, while also adding some extra vocals from Idles frontman Joe Talbot. I would have never dreamt of these artists collaborating, but I’m glad they have. Make sure to add this to your sex dungeon playlist.

THE FLOPS:

‘Joseph’ – Falling In Reverse ft. Corey Taylor and Serj Tankian

Another unexpected collaboration. Ronnie Radke has secured some impressive guests here, but I find this type of Bohemian-Rhapsody-core metal exhausting. It all feels way to overproduced, disjointed and melodramatic. And the music video is ridiculous.
