BEST AND WORST NEW TRACKS OF THE WEEK 19/06/2026: Antony Szmierek, Max Winter, Ne-Yo and more…

Artists featured this week include Antony Szmierek, Max Winter, Edward Barton, feeble little horse, ear and Ne-Yo.

THE BEST:

‘Chalk’ – Antony Szmierek

The world cup is underway, but I haven’t got any unusual football anthems to share with you. But I have a pool/snooker anthem called ‘Chalk’. It’s propelled along by an absolutely addictive electro beat and features lots of pool-related idioms like ‘making my break’ and ‘potting the black’. The Manchester indie-dance producer was apparently inspired to write the song after watching a documentary about Ronnie O Sulivan.

‘Just’ – Max Winter ft. Tony Bontana

‘Just’ is a hybrid of UK hip hop and noise rock. Brummie rapper Tony Bontana delivers frenzied bars over some jerky distorted guitars produced by London artist Max Winter. It’s topped off with some skronky sax at the end. A completely disorientating listen, but very fun.

‘Two Old Men and a Drum Machine’ – Edward Barton

‘Two Old Men and a Drum Machine’ is a song about two old men and a drum machine. It’s the work of Manchester poet-artist Edward Barton and features some hilariously spoken word mundane verses. Oh, and there is a drum machine in the track.

‘Rewind’ – feeble little horse

Feeble little horse hail from Pittsburgh and have a pretty hard-to-categorise sound that is a combination of various styles from lo-fi indie to glitchy electronica. I’ve previously featured their zany single ‘This is Real’ on this blog and it was one of my favourite tracks of 2025. Whereas that song was a bit noisy and unsettling, this has more a cutesy and twee feel, while still being enjoyably weird. It comes off their new album bitknot.

‘Ne Plus Ultra’ – ear

‘Ne Plus Ultra’ starts with faint whisper-singing. I was expecting an ambient lullaby. But then it blasts you with abrasive buzzsaw synths. It’s a contrast that sounds so good on headphones. Be sure to lend ear your ear if you like experimental electronic music.

THE WORST:

‘Thinking What I’m Thinking’ - Ne-Yo

What’s Ne-Yo up to these days? Jumping on the country music bandwagon apparently. He’s got a new country-flavoured album out titled Highway 79. If you love dull acoustic ballads like this, check it out.
