Artists featured this week include Genesis Owusu, Olof Dreijer, Wealthy Women, Charli XCX and Katy Perry.
THE BEST:
‘Life Keeps Going’ – Genesis Owusu
Don’t listen to this song while driving. It will make you
want to break a land speed record in a 30mph zone and kamikaze your vehicle
into a tree. I’m not just saying that because of its frantic lyrics: ‘‘drive,
drive, drive/ pulling the stick shift like I might die’. The rapid-fire
hi-hats are impossible to drive sensibly to. It’s a relentlessly intense track that
perfectly captures the relentless intensity of life. The song comes off the Ghanaian-Australian
singer-rapper’s new album titled Redstar Wu and the Worldwide Scourge.
‘Makwande’ – Olof Dreijer ft. Toya Delazy
Swedish producer and one half of The Knife, Olof Dreijner,
has teamed up with South African singer, Toya Delazy, to deliver this new
single off of his new album Loud Bloom. It’s a house track consisting of
juddery-but-somehow-groovy synths and fun textured percussion (I love the splodgy
water-like sound effects). The lyrics are meanwhile a playful mix of English
and Zulu.
‘Shit Breaks’ – Wealthy Women
Wealthy Women is a bold choice of band name for an all-male metal
band, but it’s clear these guys are not interested in projecting the
traditional aggressive masculine metal image. In fact, this song seems to
directly confront toxic male aggression – it’s all about the hidden darkness in
men and the realisation that abuse against women is more common than many of us
realise. It’s heavy subject matter backed by heavy guitars (although relatively
subdued compared to some of their other tracks). The semi-spoken vocals remind
me a lot of Chat Pile.
‘Wink Wink’ – Charli XCX
It looks like Charli’s upcoming LP Music, Fashion, Film
is definitely going to be a rock album. ‘Wink Wink’ mocks the idea of dropping
her bad girl image and is accompanied by a pretty scandalous video (the scene
of her jilling it to literotica is crazy). I want to hate it for being so bratty,
but it’s done in such a tongue-in-cheek way that I can’t help but admire it and
the racing guitars are pretty fun.
THE WORST:
‘Watch It Burn’ – Katy Perry
Katy Perry is desperate to start scoring hits again so she’s
also tried to go down the bad-girl pop-rock route. She’s definitely no match
for Charli XCX. In fact, this sounds more like an awkward attempt to imitate
P!nk. I also can’t watch the video without thinking of that godawful CGI Scorpion King from The Mummy Returns.
