It’s time things changed around here. I’ve decided to rename the ‘best and worst new tracks of the week’ segment to ‘bops and flops of the week’. Much more fun and less wordy, wouldn’t you agree? I will now go through the painstaking process of amending 12 years worth of posts. Artists featured this week include Rebecca Black, Chat Pile, Faerybabyy, Castle Rat, Adult DVD and Alex Warren.
THE BOPS:
‘Michael’ – Rebecca Black
Yes, this is the same Rebecca Black that gave us 'Friday'. She's no longer a 13 year old girl singing about bus seats and bowls of cereal. In fact, she's matured into a genuinely exciting pop diva, collaborating with everyone from Dorian Electra to Joey Valence & Brae, and amassing a cult following. Her new single 'Michael' is proof of how much she has changed - it's a Kylie-esque dance-pop song with dreamy synths and some interesting gender-blurring lyrics: 'But what if Michael could be me?'.
‘Same Rules’ – Chat Pile
The last single I featured by Oklahoma rock outfit Chat Pile was a ferocious and sludgy swamp monster of track. This new track takes a more moody, grungy approach - sit still sounds like a swamp monster, but one lurking in the shadows as opposed to a swamp monster in full attack mode. Apparently, 'Same Rules' was conceived as part of a challenge to write a trip hop song, but the band failed to make it sound like a trip hop song at all.
‘Is It True?’ – Faerybabyy
Faerybabyy is the project of Texan artist Peyton Morse. Their new single 'Is It True?' sounds like something The Strokes might have released in their prime in a parallel universe where Julian Casablancas is a woman (Julia Casablancas?). I'm loving the vocals and the raw played-through-a-broken-speaker production. Accompanying the song is a charming lo-fi semi-animated video made up of love hearts and laserbeams.
‘Dragon’ – Castle Rat
Castle Rat is a doom metal band whose members consist of vocalist/guitarist Riley Pinkerton ('The Rat Queen'), lead guitarist Franco Vittore ('The Count'), bassist Charlie Ruddell ('The Plague Doctor') and drummer Joshua Strmic (The Druid). 'Dragon' gripped me immediately with its Sabbathy riff. They’ve really gone all in with the 70s sound and aesthetic.
'Rolling Face' - Adult DVD
Leeds dance-punk band Adult DVD deliver this thrilling rave anthem titled 'Rolling Face'. It doesn't let up for its entire runtime and cycles through an array of different electrifying beats with some Born-Slippy-Style half-spoken vocals over the top. The sugary synth stabs that come in at the two minute mark are my favourite part.
THE FLOPS:
‘Rescuer’ – Alex Warren
How much more ordinary can the ‘Ordinary’ singer get? Are
there no limits to his blandness?
